Lamezia Terme International Airport (SUF) is the main airport in the Calabria region, in the province of Catanzaro, Italy. In addition to Ryanair, the following better-known airlines operate flights: Air Italy, Alitalia, Auistrian Airlines, EasyJet. Several flights are seasonal.
Lamezia Terme is located in the south of Italy, with 70.000 inhabitants, in the immediate vicinity of the sea, shortly known as Lamezia. It is located in the eastern part of the Santa Eufemia plain.
Its main attraction is the Norman castle-romo, in Italian Castello-normanno-svevo di Nicastro, built by the Normans during the 12th-13th centuries, situated on a hill, with records dating from the 1100s. The castle was hit by an earthquake in the 1600s and 1700s, which weakened its walls, and later it was no longer inhabited, and was left in such a state.
Also worthy of mention is the Bastion of the Knights of Malta, a huge monstrosity that also served as a watchtower. It was built in 1550 by a Spaniard, Pedro de Toledo. There are other similar bastions in the area. Near Sant’Eufemia are the ruins of the Cistercian Abbey of Santa Maria di Corazzo, founded around 1060.
The Abbey of the 40 Martyrs, located in the Lamezia Terme – Sambiase area, was built in the 9th and 10th centuries and is still active today. According to its legend, after which it takes its name, 40 Roman Christian soldiers were martyred by the pagan Constantine Licinius the Great, who threw them into icy water.
If you’re interested in painting, the Diocesan Museum has a collection of 17th and 18th century paintings and other artifacts. Also worth a visit is the Ecomuseum. In Sambiase di Lamezia Terme you will also find several churches, such as the church of St Pancrazio – one of the most famous churches in Lamezia – where you can admire paintings by the Baroque painter Mattia Preti, as well as sculptures and frescoes. It was the symbol of the new Sambiase in the 18th century.
