Tindari

Tindari

Tindari is an ancient and small city in the Province of Messina, Sicily, between Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and Cefalu.

Ancient myths, art and culture mixed with picturesque landscapes around: that sums up Tindari in general. The ancient city was founded by Greek settlers – during the war against Carthage in 396 B.C. – who named it after Tyndareus, the King of Sparta. Later on it was conquered and made a naval base by the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Byzantines and the Arabs – all of these nations left their marks on the city.

The remnants of these buildings are relatively well-preserved. One can find Roman apartment buildings, a mighty defensive wall, a Greek theatre that’s still being used to this day, and above all there’s the famous Sanctuary of the Madonna Nera from the 8th century. Beneath the old town and the ruins, lies the Oliveri-Tindari Lagoon, a small strait of water of exceptional beauty that is a nature reserve today. The Lagoon is a popular destination between the visitors of Tindari.
