Acireale

Acireale is a small coastal city on the north-eastern shore of Sicily, Italy, in the province of Catania. It lies at the foot of Mount Etna, facing the Ionian Sea.

The city offers many leisure activities, festivals and concerts, open-air markets, theaters and spas, though Acireale is most famous for its churches (including the spectacular Neo-Gothic St. Peter's Basilica, the Sicilian Baroque St. Sebastian's Basilica, and the Acireale Cathedral from the 17th century), its history and its carnivals.

The city offers much for the lovers of human arts, and its is famous for its arts academy, the Accademia dei Dafnici e degli Zelanti as well, which is the oldest academy in Sicily.

The city just 5 kilometers away to the north of Catania and only a short drive from Taormina. From its lofty position next to the city, La Timpa, a beautiful natural reserve offers a stunning view over the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna as well.

The nature reserve Timpa di Acireale is volcanic origin, it is a nice activity to discover and go throught the itinerary that starts from the lovely Baroque town and ends in the small fishing village Santa Maria La Scala.
